Types of Sunglasses

There are as many types of sunglasses as there are activities and occasions that you wear them. You'll want a different pair of sunglasses for cycling mountain trails than you will to match an elegant outfit during the day. The features you're looking for depend largely on your lifestyle, so think about when and where you'll be using the sunglasses before you buy.

Regular sunglasses are mostly for fashion, and unless you're willing to spend a lot on a pair of Oakley's, your average pair of glasses will simply be tinted and have UV protection. Always look for 99 or 100% UV protection, no matter how little you're paying for the sunglasses. Since UV protection isn't mandatory, some companies manufacture glasses with little or no UV blockage.

Polarized Sunglasses

Polarized sunglasses will reflect the glare from water, which makes them ideal for sailing or water sports. They work by blocking the vertical polarization of light, making it easier to see when light is reflected off of water or glass. You can also use these UV blocking sunglasses for driving, to deflect the glare from your windshield.

Photochromatic Sunglasses

Photochromic sunglasses are best suited to situations where the light is constantly changing. These lenses will adjust to varying levels of light: the lenses become darker in bright sunlight and quickly fade when you enter a darker area. Many people who need prescription eye wear choose progressive sunglasses, since they don't have to change their regular eyeglasses for sunglasses each time they head outside.

Clip-on sunglasess make it easy to add a pair of sunglasses onto your regular prescription glasses, rather than having to change glasses each time you enter a dark room or bright area. The UV blocking, tinted lenses simply clip onto the top of the rims of your glasses, and you can flip them up when they're not in use.

Sports Sunglasses

Sports sunglasses and goggles offer increased protection against impact and injury. They are coated with polycarbonate lenses, and will block out UV rays as well as helping you avoid eye irritation or injury while playing sports. Many players opt for wraparound sports goggles, which will keep sand and dirt from getting into your eyes from the sides of your sunglasses.

What style and features are you looking for when buying sunglasses. If you're not using them for outdoor activities, a regular pair of fashion sunglasses could be a perfect fit. However, if you wear prescription glasses, or are looking for shades to protect your eyes during a sporting event, make sure you do your research to ensure that your eyes will be properly protected during any activity.
